Summary

Biogen is seeking an accomplished Associate Director, Enterprise Architecture to define and govern the technology architecture supporting our Global Commercial & Medical (GCM) organization. This senior individual-contributor role ensures technology solutions align with business strategy, regulatory expectations, and compliance requirements while delivering secure, scalable, and business-value-driven outcomes.

Job description

As the lead architect for the Commercial and Medical domains, you will own the target-state architecture, business capability roadmap, and integration strategy across a diverse ecosystem of platforms and applications. You will proactively identify capability gaps, reduce duplication and fragmentation, and guide architecture decisions that improve speed-to-market, reduce risk, and strengthen long-term technology scalability.

What You’ll Do

  • Define and govern GCM enterprise architecture standards across Commercial & Medical IT, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture principles, security, compliance, and business strategy.
  • Serve as the primary architecture leader for strategic GCM initiatives, shaping early solution designs and guiding key architectural decisions to ensure alignment with the target-state architecture.
  • Define GCM application integration strategy, partnering with Data & Analytics architecture teams to ensure business applications connect through secure, scalable patterns.
  • Develop multi-year enterprise architecture and business capability roadmaps that guide the evolution of Commercial & Medical platforms in line with business priorities, value streams, and capability needs.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify and rationalize the application portfolio, including reducing overlapping systems, improving integration quality, lowering total cost of ownership, and avoiding unnecessary technology fragmentation.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, including cloud services, automation, AI/ML, and generative AI, evaluating their fit for GCM business needs and integrating high-value capabilities with the appropriate security and compliance controls.
  • Partner with cross-functional IT teams, including enterprise integration, data and analytics, security, infrastructure, delivery, and platform teams, to ensure architecture decisions are practical, scalable, and executable.
  • Mentor and guide solution architects, platform architects, technical leads, and delivery teams to drive consistency in solution design and adoption of architecture best practices.
  • Represent GCM in enterprise architecture forums, ensuring Commercial & Medical priorities are considered in cross-functional technology decisions.

Who You Are

You are a strategic enterprise architect who understands how technology decisions create business value. You bring the ability to connect business strategy, capability needs, platform architecture, and delivery execution into a clear, actionable technology direction. You are comfortable operating as a senior advisor and influencer across global business and IT teams. You can simplify complex technology topics for non-technical stakeholders, guide teams through ambiguity, and drive alignment without relying on direct authority. You are future-focused, practical, and outcome-oriented, able to assess emerging technologies such as AI, automation, and cloud services, while ensuring solutions remain secure, compliant, scalable, and aligned to business priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible IT experience, preferably including global or enterprise-level roles.
  • 5+ years of experience in architecture leadership roles, such as Enterprise Architect or equivalent.
  • Strong Enterprise Architecture experience in pharmaceutical or biotech companies with direct architecture ownership of Commercial and/or Medical business platforms for CRM, omnichannel engagement, field operations, patient services, and promotional and medical content (e.g., Veeva, Salesforce, PromoMats, MedComms).
  • Strong understanding of Commercial and Medical business capabilities, value streams, regulatory considerations (e.g., promotional review, HCP engagement compliance), and global operating needs.
  • Solid knowledge of enterprise integration patterns, APIs, and event-driven architecture, with working knowledge of data architecture sufficient to design how business applications connect.
  • Proven ability to translate business priorities into target-state architecture, roadmaps, and practical solution designs.
  • Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills across business, IT, and global delivery teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, such as MS, MBA, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with formal architecture frameworks and modeling techniques (e.g., TOGAF, ArchiMate, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms, customer/master data, and enterprise integration tools as they support Commercial applications.
  • Experience assessing and integrating AI/ML, generative AI, automation, or cloud-based capabilities in a regulated, compliant environment.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments, including cross-functional global Agile teams; SAFe experience is a plus.

Impact of the Role

In this role, you will help ensure GCM technology decisions translate into measurable business value. Your work will enable faster launch readiness, improved scalability, reduced system redundancy, smoother integration of new capabilities or acquisitions, and a more simplified, future-ready technology landscape. You will play a key role in helping Biogen’s Commercial and Medical organizations move faster, reduce risk, and maximize long-term value from technology investments.
