Bioinformatician I
Benaroya Research Institute
Summary
We currently are recruiting an outstanding data scientist to join our collaborative bioinformatics group. Our team partners closely with bench scientists and clinical researchers to generate insights into immune system function in health and disease. We strive to be involved throughout the research process, from study design and data generation to analysis, interpretation, and communication. We leverage a combination of statistical, computational, machine learning, and AI-assisted approaches to analyze complex, high-dimensional datasets and accelerate scientific discovery.
Job description
Responsibilities
As a member of our team, you will develop creative approaches at the intersection of data collection, integration, and analysis. You'll work with a range of genomic, cellular, and clinical data types, adding statistical rigor to the experimental process. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about using data science and bioinformatic approaches to further our vision of a healthy immune system for every individual.
Qualifications
Requirements include strong analytical skills, proficiency in a modern programming language used in data science (e.g. R, Python, SAS, Matlab, Scala, Java, C++), excellent communication and time management skills, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Candidates should be comfortable using modern AI-assisted tools and approaches as part of data analysis, programming, and scientific problem solving, and interested in continuing to develop these skills as the field evolves. Experience with machine learning methods (e.g., clustering, classification, dimensionality reduction) is desirable. Experience in the biological sciences, especially immunology, and bioinformatic analysis of high-throughput "-omics" data is preferred. The level I bioinformatician works under guidance while building domain and technical expertise. Requires a degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or other life science with a strong understanding of the principles of bioinformatics, and 0-3 years related experience following graduate studies.

Company overview
Benaroya Research Institute (BRI) is a premier non-profit biomedical research organization founded in 1956 and based in Seattle, Washington. As an affiliate of Virginia Mason Health System, BRI specializes in cutting-edge research focused on the immune system and autoimmune diseases. The institute conducts comprehensive basic, clinical, and translational research aimed at understanding immune cell function and dysfunction, with particular emphasis on conditions such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and allergies. BRI maintains extensive biorepositories containing over 350,000 samples from more than 16,000 participants, supporting both internal research and global scientific collaborations. The institute has made groundbreaking contributions including the development of MHC Class II tetramers for immune cell research, discovery of the Th2A allergy cell, and playing a key role in the development of teplizumab - the first drug to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes. With a mission to predict, prevent, reverse, and cure immune system diseases, BRI operates through multiple core laboratories and leads major research consortia including the Immune Tolerance Network, positioning itself as a global leader in immunology research and therapeutic development.
