Job Summary
Battelle is seeking an early-career scientist to support research and development involving New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), especially complex in vitro models including microphysiological systems (MPS), and other human-relevant non-animal testing platforms. This position will contribute to the development, execution, and analysis of studies using advanced in vitro models, including organoids, tissue-specific organ-on-chip systems, and related biological models.
Working alongside multidisciplinary teams of biologists, engineers, and computational scientists, the Biologist I will help generate high-quality scientific data that support chemical safety assessment, biomedical research, and product development. This is an opportunity to build technical expertise in emerging human-relevant testing technologies and regulatory science.
Responsibilities
- Perform cell-based experiments, including mammalian cell culture, cell maintenance, passaging, seeding, treatment, and endpoint analysis
- Support MPS studies, including preparation, operation, sampling, and troubleshooting of organ-on-chip, organoid, or related advanced in vitro platforms
- Use a hands-on approach to solving technical problems and have the ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment with minimal supervision
- Evaluate and review raw data, laboratory records, assay outputs, study reports, and assay qualification or validation documentation, as appropriate
- Perform work with a consistently high degree of accuracy and attention to detail including meticulous work habits and neat, accurate, legible record keeping
- Contribute to protocols, study plans, technical reports, proposals, and study-specific final reports for cell culture and MPS-based research programs
- Ability to produce and present quality scientific papers at external meetings and for publication
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
- Knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques, aseptic technique, cell health assessment, and cell-based assay execution, with interest or experience in 3D culture, organoids, co-culture systems, and/or microphysiological systems
- A proven ability to assist in the execution of research studies involving cell-based models, in vitro assays, and/or advanced biological systems
- The ability to follow standard laboratory operating procedures and health and safety guidelines
- Ability to read and understand SOWs, protocols, batch records, assay plans, and study-specific laboratory procedures
- Able to work in a highly matrixed, team-oriented environment
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse population of researchers
- Display an interest in developing job skills and in gaining additional expertise through training
- Applicants for this position must be a U.S. citizen and possess the ability to obtain a government security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with microphysiological systems, organ-on-chip platforms, 3D cell culture, primary human cells, tissue models, high-content imaging, TEER measurements, perfusion-based culture systems, or functional assays is preferred
