Summary

The Quest Diagnostics Workforce Health Solutions (WHS) Engineering Team is where deep data meets enterprise-scale impact. We are a team of builders, modernizers, and strategic leaders who work passionately to apply modern cloud-native architectures, advanced analytics, and seamless EMR workflows to solve real-world healthcare challenges, empowering corporate employers to improve clinical outcomes for millions of patients across the nation.

Job description

Based primarily at our collaborative Lenexa, KS Technology Hub, we are seeking a highly strategic, proactive Director of Engineering to champion our technology roadmap from legacy transformation to next-generation product deployment. In this role, you will not just maintain existing codebases; you will own the architecture, execution, and team topology of a scaling business. Your immediate, high-stakes mission will be steering the final migration of national enterprise clients onto our brand-new, flagship client-facing platform. This role requires an execution-focused leader who is equally comfortable whiteboarding modern .NET/React architectures with engineers and presenting technology roadmaps to executive business sponsors. The ideal candidate will be hybrid out of our Lenexa, KS site.

Responsibilities

Strategic Execution & Modernization

  • Flagship Platform Delivery: Own the execution, deployment, and ongoing feature development of our highly anticipated, modern client-facing application suite.
  • System Modernization: Drive the legacy-to-cloud migration roadmap, ensuring the systematic decommissioning of aging systems while minimizing business disruption.
  • Strategic Influence: Collaborate with Product, Business, Architecture, and Enterprise Tech teams to shape product definitions, technical requirements, and long-term organizational strategy.
  • Budget & Asset Ownership: Manage the engineering division's budget, software asset lifecycles, operational risks, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) proactively.

Global Team Engineering & Delivery Excellence

  • Global Team Management: Lead, mentor, and realign 3–4 agile software delivery teams consisting of approximately 30 engineers (a strategic mix of FTEs, contractors, and offshore resources in India).
  • Manager & IC Development: Actively coach and mature a newly appointed Engineering Manager and a talented group of technical ICs, guiding them through modern development standards.
  • Process Standardization: Establish, refine, and track internal engineering processes (CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, automated testing) aligned with broader Quest Enterprise standards.
  • Dependency & Vendor Coordination: Coordinate complex delivery timelines and technical dependencies across internal teams and external software vendors.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Change Management

  • Technical Consensus: Partner with Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, and Support organizations to resolve architectural hurdles and enforce engineering excellence.
  • High-Tenure Engagement: Lead the cultural evolution of a highly experienced, long-tenured team, leveraging strong change-management practices to foster innovation and modern agile mindsets.
  • Business Translation: Serve as the primary technical translator, communicating complex technology constraints and timelines clearly to diverse business partners and client success managers.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience: 10-15+ years of software engineering and technical leadership experience.
  • Engineering Depth: Strong background in the Microsoft (.NET) development ecosystem, modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred), and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
  • People Leadership: Proven success managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams, including experience managing other people leaders (Engineering Managers).
  • Cloud Expertise: Hands-on experience delivering enterprise-grade, cloud-native applications (Azure preferred).
  • Agile Transformation: Deep expertise running agile teams, optimizing sprint cadences, and managing complex software product lifecycles.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills to bridge technical solutions to executive business strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Global Delivery: Experience managing a distributed team model, successfully aligning on-site US engineers with offshore development centers in India.
  • Legacy-to-Cloud Migration: A proven track record of taking complex legacy database platforms and porting them smoothly into cloud-native architectures.
  • Change Management: Experience leading teams through technical and cultural transformations, keeping developer engagement scores high during periods of transition.
  • Domain Context: While healthcare experience is highly valued, transformational leadership and strong engineering fundamentals is more important than industry tenure.
