Summary

We seek an investigator who will establish an independent, multidisciplinary research program addressing fundamental questions in neuronal cell biology through the integration of mechanistic approaches with advanced structural and cellular imaging.

Job description

Areas of particular interest include the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying synaptogenesis and synaptic transmission, polarized trafficking and organelle dynamics in neurons, neuronal genome organization, and other aspects of neuronal architecture and function that can be uniquely interrogated through cryo-ET and vEM.

Investigators developing new cryo-ET, vEM, correlative imaging, or quantitative image-analysis approaches for neuronal cell biology are also strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join the CoE-SCB and the Division of Neuronal Cell Biology, holding a faculty appointment in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology, creating a close scientific interface between these highly collaborative research environments.

This recruitment represents a joint strategic effort between the CoE-SCB and the Division of Neuronal Cell Biology within the Department of Developmental Neurobiology to establish a research program that bridges molecular, organellar, and cellular scales.

The CoE-SCB provides an integrated environment for structural cell biology, bringing together expertise in cryo-EM, cryo-ET, cryogenic volume imaging, correlative microscopy, and computational image analysis.

The Department of Developmental Neurobiology provides an outstanding complementary environment for investigating neuronal development, organization, and function. Investigators have access to specialized resources that include human stem-cell systems, advanced live-cell and super-resolution imaging, Lattice Light Sheet microscopy, Meso-SPIM instrumentation, and sophisticated image processing and analysis.

We are particularly interested in early-career investigators who are excited by the opportunity to build an ambitious research program at the interface of neuronal cell biology and structural cell biology and to contribute intellectually and technologically to the growing cryo-ET and vEM community at St. Jude.

Faculty appointments at the Assistant or Associate Member level may be considered.

Company overview

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a world-renowned pediatric research and treatment institution headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, dedicated to advancing cures for childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas, it stands as the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted exclusively to children. The hospital operates on a unique funding model where families never receive bills for treatment, travel, housing, or food, with costs exceeding $2 billion annually primarily supported by donations through its fundraising organization ALSAC. St. Jude treats approximately 8,600 patients each year from all 50 states and around the world, with a focus on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, sickle cell disease, and infectious diseases. The institution employs over 7,000 staff members and maintains eight affiliate clinics across the United States. Through its St. Jude Global initiative, the hospital shares research and treatment protocols internationally, partnering with more than 350 institutions in over 90 countries. St. Jude has been instrumental in increasing childhood cancer survival rates from 20% in 1962 to over 80% today, while maintaining a robust research program that includes gene therapy, bone marrow transplantation, and precision medicine approaches.
