Company overview

Switch Bioworks is an innovative agricultural biotechnology company founded in 2022 as a Stanford University spin-out, headquartered in San Carlos, California. The company specializes in developing sustainable biofertilizers through advanced synthetic biology and microbial engineering. Their core technology focuses on engineering symbiotic microbes that can produce nitrogen fertilizer directly on crop plant roots using precise genetic circuits. This approach aims to replace traditional chemical fertilizers with biologically-powered alternatives that are more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. The company has secured significant funding, including a $17 million seed round and a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E program. Their international team of scientists and bioengineers works on translating cutting-edge research from the lab to field applications, with particular focus on corn and other cereal crops. As part of the growing global bioeconomy, Switch Bioworks represents a promising solution for sustainable agriculture that balances environmental stewardship with economic viability for farmers worldwide.
