Company overview
Alcor Life Extension Foundation is an American nonprofit, federally tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona, dedicated to advancing and applying cryonics—the preservation of human bodies and brains in liquid nitrogen after legal death in the hope of future revival and restoration to health. Founded in 1972 in California as the Alcor Society for Solid State Hypothermia and renamed in 1977, Alcor performed its first human cryopreservation in 1976 and relocated its storage operations to Arizona in 1994. The organization serves a global membership of roughly 1,900 members and maintains more than 200 cryopreserved patients, including whole-body and neuro (head-only) cases, as well as companion animals. Alcor funds patient care through membership dues, donations, and case income, and in 1997 established the separate Alcor Patient Care Trust to segregate and protect long-term storage funding—a structure unique among cryonics organizations. Alcor also conducts public education and research on cryopreservation techniques such as vitrification.
