Company overview
The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is a premier independent, not-for-profit environmental research organization dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of ecosystems and their interactions with natural and human factors. Founded in 1983 by eminent ecologist Gene E. Likens, the institute operates from a 2,000-acre research campus in Millbrook, New York. With approximately 120 employees including 20 Ph.D. scientists, Cary Institute conducts groundbreaking research across four core areas: disease ecology, freshwater ecology, forest health, and urban ecology. The organization leads two National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research Network sites and plays a key role in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network. Cary Institute scientists have made significant contributions to environmental policy, including instrumental work on acid rain research that informed the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments. The institute maintains long-term studies on tick-borne diseases, Hudson River ecology, and forest pest management while advising government agencies including the EPA, IPCC, and White House scientific committees. Through its extensive education programs, Cary Institute trains the next generation of ecologists and enhances ecological literacy among students, decision-makers, and the public.
