Summary

Advance your research career while exploring the molecular mechanisms that connect ion-channel function, cellular signaling, and cancer cell plasticity. The Kaoud Laboratory in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate how TRPM7 integrates its ion-channel and kinase activities to regulate these processes.

Job description

Research Opportunities

We welcome candidates with strong research experience in either protein biochemistry/molecular biology or molecular/cell biology. Prior expertise in both areas is not required. Your research focus and complementary training will reflect your background and interests.

  • Protein biochemistry-focused research: Use recombinant protein expression and purification, molecular cloning and mutagenesis, biochemical assays, and structural and biophysical approaches—including cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM)—to investigate TRPM7 channel–kinase regulation.
  • Molecular/cell biology-focused research: Investigate TRPM7-dependent cellular and nuclear signaling and channel function using molecular and cellular approaches, patch-clamp electrophysiology, and proteomics/phosphoproteomics.

Training in complementary techniques will be provided based on the fellow’s background and research interests, including opportunities to learn patch-clamp electrophysiology and work with patient-derived cancer organoid models and animal models.

Scientific Contributions and Mentorship

The fellow will contribute to experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, manuscript preparation, scientific presentations, and grant development. Opportunities will also be available to mentor graduate, professional, and undergraduate students. You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment with opportunities to interact with investigators and research cores within the Center for Molecular Interactions in Cancer Research (CMIC) and the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. Scientific and career development mentoring will support your growth toward research independence.

Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Research and Experimental Studies: Conduct biochemical, molecular, cellular, and biophysical studies related to TRPM7 channel–kinase signaling and cancer cell plasticity, including experimental design, execution, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Scientific Writing, Presentation, and Grant Development: Prepare and contribute to manuscripts, research progress reports, abstracts, scientific presentations, and grant applications.
  • Student Training, Mentoring, and Laboratory Activities: Assist with training and research guidance of graduate, professional, and undergraduate students and contribute to general laboratory activities.
  • Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned: Participate in seminars, scientific meetings, collaborative activities, career development, and other research-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree by the start date in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, cancer biology, pharmacology, biophysics, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related biomedical discipline
  • Strong research experience in either protein biochemistry/molecular biology or molecular/cell biology

Company overview

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is Arkansas' only comprehensive academic health sciences university and the state's largest public employer. Founded in 1879 by eight physicians, UAMS has evolved into a statewide health system encompassing six colleges: Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Professions, Public Health, and Graduate School. As a premier academic medical center, UAMS combines education, research, and clinical care through its UAMS Medical Center, which serves as Arkansas' only adult Level 1 trauma center and the state's sole provider of adult kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants. The institution operates with a $1.3 billion budget and generates over $100 million in annual research funding, maintaining internationally recognized programs in multiple myeloma, aging, and other specialized areas. UAMS supports over 3,000 students, 900 medical residents and fellows, and maintains affiliations with Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. With eight regional campuses across Arkansas, UAMS provides extensive community outreach and telehealth services, ensuring healthcare access throughout the state while contributing approximately $3.92 billion annually to Arkansas' economy.
