Job description

In this role, you will drive systems engineering activities across the product lifecycle, including system architecture, requirements development and traceability, interface management, system integration, verification and validation, and technical risk management.

As a system-level technical leader, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams spanning electrical, mechanical, software, design assurance, sustaining, regulatory, and clinical engineering to translate customer and clinical needs into innovative, reliable, and compliant medical device solutions from concept to commercialization and sustaining.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and system-level expertise for the design, development, integration, and commercialization of complex medical device systems.
  • Lead cross-functional technical decision-making, build alignment on technical strategies, and secure agreement across engineering, functional management, and business leadership.
  • Define, maintain, and evolve system architecture, including functional and physical architectures, subsystem partitioning, interface definitions, and system performance requirements.
  • Lead end-to-end system integration across hardware, software, electrical, mechanical, optical, manufacturing and disposable subsystems.
  • Drive Systems Engineering best practices across projects, including system concept development, architecture, interface management, technical documentation, and lifecycle traceability.
  • Drive requirements engineering by translating customer, clinical, and stakeholder needs into clear, testable system requirements and ensuring traceability throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Lead system-level trade studies and design evaluations to assess technical alternatives, optimize performance, and reduce development risk.
  • Manage technical execution by identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving complex system integration issues while communicating technical progress, risks, and recommendations to key stakeholders.
  • Develop and apply analytical methods, including modeling, simulation, mathematical analysis, and system characterization, to solve complex engineering problems and drive corrective actions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers while advancing Systems Engineering methodologies and best practices across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience with a bachelor's degree, or minimum of 8 years' experience with a master's degree.
  • Experience defining system architectures and developing complex multidisciplinary systems integrating hardware, software, electrical, and mechanical components.
  • Experience in leading complex system analysis from concept through commercialization.
  • Proficiency with requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Jama, Code Beamer, Jira, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated expertise in requirements engineering, including requirements development, decomposition, allocation, and traceability.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with laser systems, optical technologies, or applied optics in the design and development of medical devices.
  • MS/PhD in Engineering or Systems Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5 or more years of experience in a formal Systems Engineering role.
