Summary

The laboratory of Christina Theodoris, MD, PhD, is seeking a talented and motivated Research Associate I with a background in experimental genomics to join the research program in the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and the Gladstone Institute of Data Science and Biotechnology.

Job description

The Theodoris Lab focuses on leveraging cutting-edge experimental genomics and machine learning to map the gene networks driving cardiovascular disease and to develop network-correcting therapies. This is a unique opportunity to work at the interface of experimental and computational biology in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

What You Will Do

  • Perform a variety of molecular biology and genomics experiments, including RNA/DNA purification, PCR, cloning, and sequencing library preparation.
  • Conduct cell culture experiments, particularly with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
  • Contribute to single-cell and/or ChIP-seq experiments and analyses.
  • Manage laboratory operations, including organization, ordering supplies, and maintaining compliance with safety protocols.
  • Collaborate closely with computational biologists to integrate experimental and analytical approaches.
  • Actively participate in lab meetings, present findings, and contribute to research discussions.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of junior lab members.

What You Will Need

  • BS/BA in a related field (e.g., molecular biology, genomics, bioengineering, or a similar discipline).
  • 1+ years of related laboratory experience.
  • Proficiency in tissue culture, especially with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA purification, PCR, and cloning.
  • Experience in experimental genomics, including sequencing library preparation (e.g., single-cell sequencing, ChIP-seq).
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

What Is Preferred

  • Prior experience in cardiovascular biology, stem cell differentiation, or gene regulation studies.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools or experience collaborating with computational researchers.
  • A demonstrated track record of scientific initiative, including contributions to publications or research presentations.

Company overview

Gladstone Institutes is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research organization founded in 1979 and based in San Francisco, California. With a mission to drive transformative discovery in disease-oriented science, Gladstone focuses on developing cures rather than just treatments for major diseases. The organization operates through five specialized institutes: Cardiovascular Disease, Data Science and Biotechnology, Genomic Immunology, Neurological Disease, and Virology. Gladstone is renowned for its Nobel Prize-winning researchers, including Shinya Yamanaka (2012 Nobel Prize for induced pluripotent stem cells) and Jennifer Doudna (2020 Nobel Prize for CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology). The institute employs over 600 scientists, researchers, and staff who collaborate across disciplines to tackle complex biomedical challenges. Gladstone maintains strong academic partnerships with UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, and Stanford University while operating as an administratively independent organization. With an annual operating budget of approximately $126 million, Gladstone has produced over 200 scientific publications annually and has generated 211 patents, contributing significantly to biomedical innovation and therapeutic development.
