Job Summary

The Khurana Lab seeks a highly organized, hands-on Laboratory Manager to take a leading role in the day-to-day operations of a large, collaborative research laboratory. The primary focus of this position is laboratory operations: ensuring that shared resources, equipment, supplies, workflows, documentation, and team coordination are managed proactively and reliably so that research projects can move forward efficiently. The successful candidate will also contribute directly to scientific projects and should be an experienced technician who is motivated to continue developing their technical expertise while growing as an operational leader.

Laboratory Operations, Project Support, and Team Coordination

  • Lead and coordinate day-to-day laboratory operations, serving as a central point of contact for shared laboratory needs and working closely with the PI, senior scientists, research staff, students, and collaborators.
  • Maintain an organized, efficient, and well-functioning laboratory environment by overseeing shared spaces, equipment, supplies, reagents, consumables, common stocks, and laboratory repositories.
  • Manage inventory and ordering processes; anticipate laboratory needs, track critical supplies, coordinate purchasing, and address operational issues before they disrupt research.
  • Oversee shared equipment readiness, routine maintenance, service coordination, scheduling, documentation, and troubleshooting or escalation of equipment issues.
  • Maintain and improve operational systems, including shared logs, SOPs, quality assurance practices, resource tracking, laboratory documentation, and workflows that promote reproducibility and accountability.
  • Actively support research projects by coordinating resources and workflows, helping troubleshoot logistical and technical barriers, and ensuring that teams have the materials, equipment, and operational support needed to meet project goals and timelines.
  • Orient and train new staff, students, and visiting researchers on laboratory workflows, shared resources, technical practices, and operational expectations; help coordinate onboarding and offboarding.
  • Communicate proactively across a large collaborative team, reinforce shared laboratory practices, follow through on action items, and help translate operational decisions into clear workflows and responsibilities.
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement practical solutions that improve organization, communication, safety, compliance, resource stewardship, and laboratory throughput.

Scientific and Technical Contributions

  • Perform specialized experimental procedures and contribute directly to laboratory research projects, with emphasis on stem cell culture and differentiation, molecular biology, genome editing, microscopy, and related cellular assays.
  • Participate in the design, optimization, documentation, and troubleshooting of experimental protocols and research workflows.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and training to research assistants, students, and other laboratory members, and help promote rigorous experimental documentation, quality control, and reproducibility.
  • Analyze and communicate experimental results and contribute to reports, presentations, manuscripts, and other scientific materials as appropriate.
  • Maintain and expand technical expertise, helping evaluate and implement new technologies, methods, and workflows that strengthen the laboratory's research capabilities.

General Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operations of the lab.
  • Oversee use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities.
  • Coordinate all regulatory and compliance activities.
  • Contribute to scientific literature and may present the data at meetings.
  • Train staff in specialized lab techniques.
  • Serve as the Lab safety officer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in biology, neuroscience, molecular/cellular biology, bioengineering, or a related scientific field required; advanced degree is a plus.
  • 3-5+ years of progressively responsible research experience in an academic, biotechnology, or biomedical research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience with laboratory organization, operations, or management, preferably within a medium-to-large collaborative research group.
  • Strong hands-on technical background.
  • Human pluripotent stem cell culture experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with genome editing, microscopy/high-content imaging, and molecular or biochemical assays is desirable.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or coordinating junior research staff, students, or trainees is preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and follow-through across multiple people, projects, resources, and deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across a large and highly collaborative team.
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented approach with the ability to identify problems early, troubleshoot effectively, prioritize competing needs, and drive issues to resolution.
  • Ability to balance operational leadership with hands-on scientific work and shift priorities when laboratory or project needs require it.
  • Demonstrated independence, initiative, sound judgment, and ownership of responsibilities.
  • Strong technical foundation in molecular biology, biochemistry, and mammalian tissue culture, with a clear interest in continued technical growth.
  • High degree of computer literacy and comfort with digital systems used for laboratory operations, inventory, scheduling, documentation, and data organization.
