Summary

As an important member of the Computed Tomography (CT) Imaging Physics and Algorithm team, the Research Scientist will develop innovative physics-based solutions/corrections and support medical imaging platform needs by leading image quality improvements in CT by developing cutting edge Photon Counting systems.

Job description

Your role

  • Apply system-level engineering approach to develop CT/X-ray imaging features, focusing on signal and image processing, CT reconstruction, and calibration to optimize image quality. Leverages strong systems-level and scanner experience to ensure end-to-end performance across the imaging chain.
  • Investigate and resolve image quality issues during product introduction and from the installed base, communicating findings clearly to stakeholders. Delivers safe, effective, and well-documented solutions based on rigorous data analysis.
  • Develop and enhance R&D tools for physics-based simulation and image formation, including benchmarks, dataflow requirements, and Software Requirement Specifications. Works primarily in MATLAB, with increasing use of Python and optional C++ for performance-critical components.
  • Maintain expertise in CT physics and advanced processing algorithms, with strong emphasis on photon-counting CT as a top priority. Brings additional knowledge in spectral, dual-energy, and multi-energy CT, as well as cone beam CT, enabling improved material differentiation and image quality optimization.
  • Drive innovation by owning the CT imaging physics roadmap and aligning with business strategy across clinical, marketing, and systems teams. Stays current on emerging technologies such as AI/deep learning, contributes to IP and publications, and represents the organization in regulatory and industry engagements.

You're the right fit if

  • You have 2+ years of combined professional and graduate-level research experience in Physics/Medical Imaging (CT and/or X-ray preferred) as an individual contributor.
  • You have a minimum of a Master's in Physics, Mathematics, Biomedical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering (or related field), with a background in the theory of medical image formation and reconstruction (preferred).
  • You bring expertise in CT/X-ray imaging, signal and image processing, CT reconstruction, calibration, and systems-level/scanner understanding. Differentiating skills include experience with photon counting and/or spectral CT (dual-/multi-energy imaging), as well as cone beam CT, physics-based simulation, and hands-on prototype or scanner work.
  • You are experienced in MATLAB (primary), Python (increasing use), and C++ (preferred), including GUI and C-MEX functionality, and familiarity with AI/deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow preferred).
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and clearly explain complex algorithms, imaging chain trade-offs, and cross-functional impacts to non-specialists.
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position. Travel up to 10% may be required.

Company overview

Koninklijke Philips N.V., commonly known as Philips, is a Dutch multinational health technology company that has evolved from its origins as a consumer electronics conglomerate into a leading global healthcare solutions provider. Founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Philips has transformed its business focus since the 2010s to concentrate exclusively on health technology. The company operates through three main divisions: Diagnosis and Treatment, which manufactures advanced medical imaging equipment including MRI, CT, and ultrasound scanners; Connected Care, specializing in patient monitoring systems and respiratory care products under the Respironics brand; and Personal Health, producing consumer healthcare products like electric shavers, Sonicare toothbrushes, and Avent childcare items. With 68,419 employees worldwide and annual revenues of €18.02 billion (2024), Philips maintains its global headquarters in Amsterdam while operating manufacturing, R&D, and sales facilities across 26 countries. The company has strategically divested its consumer electronics, lighting, and home appliance businesses to become a pure-play health technology organization, positioning itself at the forefront of medical innovation and digital healthcare solutions.
