Job description

The Opportunity

The Cell Therapy department within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) is seeking a motivated, collaborative Scientist 3 to advance next-generation, off-the-shelf cell therapies for patients with intractable diseases. Reporting to a Principal Fellow, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our iPSC-to-T cell differentiation platform, directly influencing pipeline programs and mechanistic biology discoveries.

  • Develop, optimize, and implement robust iPSC-to-T cell differentiation protocols in the context of diverse therapeutic programs.
  • Investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying T-cell lineage specification, differentiation efficiency, and maturation to drive process enhancements.
  • Translate biological discoveries into tangible improvements in cell-product quality, yield, phenotype, and function.
  • Analyze complex, multidimensional datasets to draw incisive conclusions and guide subsequent experimental strategies.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with research, translational, computational, process development, and external partner groups across gRED.
  • Contribute to scientific and strategic planning for the Cell Therapy department and Genentech's broader therapeutic pipeline.

Who you are

  • PhD in Immunology, Stem Cell Biology, Cell & Molecular Biology, or related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience differentiating iPSCs to T cell and/or other immune cell lineages.
  • Strong cell and molecular biology background with a demonstrated ability to apply mechanistic approaches to investigate cell fate decisions.
  • Proven track record of evaluating and optimizing the robustness, consistency, and reproducibility of stem cell differentiation platforms.
  • Deep experience developing and applying phenotypic and functional assays to characterize T cell activity, fitness, and potency.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated history of collaborative delivery across multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), high-throughput screening, or other quantitative multivariate process-optimization methodologies.
  • Prior experience in cell therapy or drug development, understanding critical quality attributes (identity, purity, yield, viability, and potency).
  • Hands-on expertise with CRISPR/Cas9 or other genome-engineering modalities in stem cells (iPSCs).
  • Demonstrated record of scientific impact through high-impact publications, patents, or contributions to therapeutic advancement.

Location

This is a lab-based role at our South San Francisco, CA campus. Onsite presence is required.
