Job description

The Opportunity

The Department of Immunology at Genentech is seeking a driven Scientist with deep expertise in lung biology and immunology to uncover novel therapeutic targets for respiratory diseases. In this role, you will lead research projects investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the lung's response to injury, chronic inflammation, and repair.

  • Lead projects investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury, chronic inflammation, and tissue repair.
  • Advance novel research-stage programs into early clinical development by generating robust proof-of-concept data.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art technologies, including in vitro and in vivo models, to evaluate novel molecules and targeted delivery systems.
  • Dissect the pathogenesis of inflammatory lung diseases and identify the mechanism of action (MOA) of breakthrough therapies.
  • Drive pipeline research while actively exploring new biologies and pathways for target discovery.
  • Facilitate fruitful, open collaborations across immunology, human genetics, biomarker discovery, and early clinical development.
  • Present research findings effectively at intra- and inter-departmental scientific meetings.

Who You Are

  • PhD in immunology, stem cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field, with a demonstrated record of high-quality publications.
  • Deep understanding of lung biology, particularly in chronic respiratory diseases, tissue remodeling/regeneration, or host-microbe interactions.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in molecular biology, including cellular transfections, gene expression profiling, precision genome editing, and targeted RNA delivery technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with primary cell isolation from human or mouse tissues, in vitro immunological assays, and multi-dimensional flow cytometry.
  • Track record of independently designing, executing, troubleshooting, and interpreting complex experiments leading to first-author publication(s) in top-tier journals.

Preferred

  • Proven experience with complex in vitro systems, including airway/alveolar organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) 3D cultures, or organ-on-a-chip technologies.
  • Experience with targeted therapeutic delivery of nucleic acid modalities (e.g., mRNA, siRNA, ASOs) using viral or non-viral vectors.
  • Experience with computational data analysis, including scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, or mining public/clinical datasets.
