Summary

We are looking for an engineer with expertise in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and materials science, who can independently solve complex thermomechanical challenges, lead projects, design and execute experiments, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team focused on radiation therapy hardware development. This will be an on-site role in the Palo Alto office with travel requirements to the Mountain View facility.

Job description

We are looking for a versatile and well-rounded Engineer with a strong background in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and materials science to join our Linear Accelerator Systems group. This position is within the hardware group for the radiation producing subsystem on our Radiation Therapy machines. The candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary team that also includes microwave, electrical and mechanical engineers.

The candidate will be analyzing and solving challenging thermomechanical problems that result from the interaction of concentrated electron beams and high-power microwaves with various materials of hardware components. The candidate will be responsible for the thermomechanical design and metallurgical/material science aspects of beam generation components, as well as general mechanical engineering and design work on the sub-system.

The successful candidate needs to be able to independently design, construct, debug, execute and interpret experiments. We are looking for a team player who combines a strong and broad technical background with superb practical hands-on aptitude and project leadership skills. The ability to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional team is essential, as is the ability to efficiently manage project timelines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Perform thermal, structural and fluid flow simulations
  • Employ Design for X methodology, including manufacturability, reliability and cost
  • Perform root cause analyses to understand failure mechanisms
  • Design, execute and interpret experiments
  • Work with other scientists, engineers and suppliers to review and solve difficult technical issues
  • Provide support and expertise to Manufacturing and Field Service groups
  • Provide scope, cost and schedule estimates for research and engineering projects
  • Coordinate resources needed to complete a task or project
  • Improve documentation, baseline data and processes
