This role serves as a subject matter expert in clinical sample preparation, LC-MS/MS method development, and applied workflow development, while remaining flexible to support broader new product development projects across magnetic bead-based sample preparation, extraction, enrichment, cleanup, and other analytical technologies as business needs evolve. This position reports to the Senior R&D Manager, New Product Development and is part of the Research and Development Department located in Torrance, California and will be an on-site role.

Job description

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop and commercialize clinical sample preparation consumables and LC-MS/MS workflows for clinical research, toxicology, forensic, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and broader applied-market needs.
  • Identify and understand clinical sample preparation, LC-MS/MS workflow, and industrial separation challenges, and translate them into practical technical solutions and R&D opportunities.
  • Design, optimize, and troubleshoot sample preparation methods and workflows across diverse analytes, biological matrices, and applications, with emphasis on analyte recovery, matrix-effect reduction, reproducibility, and LC-MS/MS compatibility.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute projects, transfer technology, resolve technical issues, and deliver new products on time.
  • Review scientific literature, conduct experiments, evaluate workflow performance, communicate results, prepare technical and customer-facing materials, publish findings, and support patent filings.

  • Master’s degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, or a related scientific field. A PhD is preferred.
  • 3+ years Hands-on experience developing sample preparation, extraction, enrichment, cleanup, or quantitative workflows for biological, clinical, or other complex matrices.
  • Strong hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS, mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, or related analytical instrumentation, including method development, optimization, quantitative analysis, data interpretation, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing and interpreting experiments that assess method-performance attributes such as recovery, selectivity, sensitivity, reproducibility, matrix effects, carryover, and robustness.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex R&D projects and communicate scientific results clearly through reports, presentations, publications, application notes, conference materials, or customer-facing content.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift, move, or carry laboratory materials or equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in laboratory environments involving chemicals, biological materials, hazardous waste, analytical instruments, and required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to travel occasionally or work necessary overtime based on project, customer, conference, or business needs.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • 3 years of experience working in or closely supporting a clinical laboratory, including clinical sample preparation and LC-MS/MS workflows for biological matrices.
  • Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry analysis in clinical, toxicology, or related diagnostic applications.
  • Experience developing magnetic bead products or automation-ready sample preparation workflows across multiple formats, analyte classes, biological matrices, and application areas.
  • An established scientific network and customer-facing experience translating clinical laboratory, clinical mass spectrometry, toxicology, or related diagnostic needs into product development opportunities.
  • A strong record of scientific publication and communication through peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations or posters, technical reports, application notes, or related content.
