Summary

The CTO Functional Strategy Manager develops and maintains the functional and operating model strategy for DPTF. The role takes GSK's strategy and its digital and technology priorities and works out what they mean for the function, co-creating a north star vision with architecture and domain leadership, scanning the market and the state of the art, and aligning DPTF's major initiatives to the direction of travel. Technology strategy and the technology roadmap sit with the Chief Architect. This role aligns the functional strategy to them and does not own them. It communicates DPTF's strategy to leadership across GSK, and engages those leaders in the other direction to understand what they need from the function, so the strategy reflects the demands actually placed on DPTF.

Job description

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the DPTF functional strategy, translating GSK's strategy and its digital and technology priorities into what the function needs to be and to do.
  • Co-create the north star vision for DPTF with the Chief Architect, architecture leadership and platform and domain leads, so that the destination is shared across the function.
  • Align the functional strategy to the technology strategy and technology roadmap owned by the Chief Architect, keeping the two coherent as both evolve.
  • Scan the market, the industry and the state of the art in technology, operating models and ways of working, including what comparable organisations and key technology partners are doing, and bring what matters into the strategy with a clear view of its relevance to GSK.
  • Translate the strategy into functional objectives and OKRs, and maintain the strategic planning cadence through which they are set and reviewed.
  • Assess DPTF's major initiatives against the north star, identifying where the portfolio does not move the function toward it and raising this through governance.
  • Communicate DPTF's strategy to leadership across GSK, producing the materials and narrative that make the direction clear and credible.
  • Engage leaders across GSK to understand what they need from DPTF, and feed those requirements back into the strategy and into planning.
  • Facilitate strategy workshops, planning sessions and leadership reviews, so that the strategy and the north star are built with architecture and domain leadership in the room.
  • Develop strategic recommendations and options for leadership review, setting out the trade-offs behind each, and prepare the briefings and materials the Head of Technology Business Operations, the CTO and the DPTF Leadership Team need.
  • Embed the function's reliability and AI acceleration ambitions into the functional strategy, so they are reflected in objectives and in initiative selection.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate research, synthesis and the production of strategy materials.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Technology, Economics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years in strategy, technology strategy, consulting, operating model design or a comparable planning role.
  • Experience developing functional or business strategy within a large and complex organisation.
  • Experience translating enterprise strategy into objectives and OKRs for a function.
  • Experience synthesizing complex and incomplete information into a clear position that leaders can act on.
  • Experience scanning market and technology developments and assessing their relevance to a specific organisation.
  • Experience engaging and influencing senior leaders across organisational boundaries, including facilitating strategy workshops and leadership reviews.
  • Experience producing executive level strategy materials and narrative.
  • Familiarity with AI tools applied to research, synthesis and the production of strategy material.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate study or professional certification in strategy, business or technology management desirable.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, able to work from ambiguity to a clear and defensible position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, able to produce narrative and materials that land with an executive audience.
  • Strong influencing and facilitation skills, able to run a workshop with senior leaders and build a shared view across architecture, the domains and wider GSK leadership.
  • Curiosity and breadth, able to track technology and market developments and judge which of them matter.
  • Comfort working without direct authority, on a strategy that is co-owned across the function.

Working Pattern

This role is hybrid, with a mix of on-site collaboration and remote working. Specific office and remote expectations will be discussed during the interview.
